Approximately 20% of the electricity consumed in Romania comes from a single company: Societatea Națională Nuclearelectrica S.A. (SNN). When SNN decided to modernize its wireless network at the central headquarters in Bucharest and at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, the requirements matched the stakes: native security, stability, scalability, and precise control over data traffic. SNN initiated a sectoral procurement procedure for Access Point equipment and PoE injectors – essential components for modern wireless connectivity in an organization of this scale.

The core requirement was not simply extending wireless coverage. The procured equipment had to integrate natively with SNN’s existing security infrastructure, without creating vulnerabilities or incompatibilities in the network architecture. The resulting network had to be stable, scalable, and allow granular management of both data traffic and access policies.

The project covered two distinct locations: SNN’s central headquarters on Bulevardul Iancu de Hunedoara in Bucharest, and the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant – one of Romania’s most critical energy facilities, where units 1 and 2 of the CANDU 6 type operate, each with an installed capacity of approximately 700 MW.

DAAC digital România responded to SNN’s requirements with Fortinet equipment – official Advocate Partner of the DAAC digital group for security and infrastructure solutions in enterprise projects.

The choice of Fortinet was not coincidental in the context of this project. The Fortinet ecosystem is built around the concept of native integration between components – precisely the primary requirement set by SNN. Fortinet wireless equipment communicates directly with security solutions from the same ecosystem, eliminating the need for additional compatibility layers and reducing the network attack surface.

DAAC digital România won the tender by offering the best combination of technical solution and pricing – through a regulated procedure under Law No. 99/2016 on sectoral procurement, in which SNN holds the status of Contracting Entity. Delivery was carried out in two stages, corresponding to the two locations: the central headquarters in Bucharest and Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant.

Societatea Națională Nuclearelectrica S.A. is the only producer of electricity through nuclear processes in Romania and the sole producer of CANDU 6 nuclear fuel in the country.

The company operates two main branches. The first is the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, which manages units 1 and 2 – CANDU reactors fueled by natural uranium and cooled by heavy water, each with an installed capacity of approximately 700 MW. The second is the Nuclear Fuel Plant in Pitești, which fully covers the fuel needs of both Cernavodă units.

SNN’s majority shareholder is the Romanian State, represented by the Ministry of Energy, with a stake of 82.49%. The remaining shares are held by private individuals and legal entities. SNN has been listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange since 2013, with its registered office at 48 Bulevardul Iancu de Hunedoara, Bucharest. With two operational units, the company covers approximately 20% of Romania’s electricity consumption.

A project delivered at Nuclearelectrica cannot be compared to a standard networking engagement. Critical national infrastructure – energy, utilities, transportation – operates under security and reliability standards significantly higher than the commercial market average.
